Some weapons such as the MP5 and L115A1 are shared by both teams, mainly for balance reasons. Joint Operations forces weapons are all modern infantry weapons such as the M4 or SR25, whereas the Rebels may select from a number of Warsaw Pact weapons such as the AK-47 or SVD. Players can choose a loadout of a primary weapon, secondary weapon, grenades, and accessory. Servers officially leased from NovaLogic can support up to 150 players (75 per team) at once, much larger than the common 32 and 64 player limits of other games. Players can choose from a number of classes: Rifleman, Gunner, Sniper, Engineer, or Medic, each with their own specialty. GameplayThe game contains a number of game modes, the most popular being Advance and Secure, as well as Team Deathmatch, Team King of the Hill, and Cooperative.
The game has a full day-night cycle integrated, which can turn a brightly lit jungle forest into a dark and foreboding stand of shadows if the game goes on long enough. The polycount for individual objects is noticeably low, but due to the vast expanses and view distance of up to slightly more than a kilometer, the total polycount is rather high. Typically the area intended for play is well covered with tropical foliage, something NovaLogic referred to as "superfoliation," as well as structures and control points. Maps are for the most part unlimited in size the engine uses a single section of terrain which was then tesselated. Joint Operations lacks a single-player storyline mode, the only available single-player content being training missions. In Joint Operations NovaLogic decided to focus on bringing massive multiplayer battles on expansive maps, a natural progression of the larger player limits available in multiplayer of Delta Force: Land Warrior, which could support 64 players in an era of dial-up Internet connections. "With this sale to THQ Nordic, we now have time to concentrate on searching for the next step, one that is as fun, groundbreaking and rewarding as the NovaLogic experience has been.OverviewJoint Operations: Typhoon Rising is a class-based tactical and strategic multiplayer shooter and a successor to NovaLogic's Delta Force line of games. "It stopped doing R&D in 2007 but kept on marketing its extensive catalog until the present. "NovaLogic has operated continuously since it was founded in 1985," Garcia added. Pollice continued: "We are scouting opportunities to expand these franchises in a manner that honours NovaLogic's rich heritage and sets THQ Nordic up to compete in a new genre."Īs for NovaLogic, the firm had stopped creating new products in 2007, but had continued to promote its back catalogue.
The flight simulator franchises in particular could be intriguing given that the space has been somewhat ignored and may be ripe for proper VR development.
"We are extremely satisfied with the new additions to our portfolio, and also very thrilled about how to continue some of said franchises, we are open for talks in this regard if any developer approaches us with a concept for a potential sequel to any IP."Īs of August, THQ Nordic had 23 games in development (13 unannounced) and now that number is likely to grow with one or more of these NovaLogic properties. "NovaLogic pioneered military simulations and military-themed multiplayer shooters with vehicular combat and also clearly targeted at an adult audience," said Reinhard Pollice, Business and Product Development Director, THQ Nordic. "We are happy to see the franchises we created in such capable hands." As individuals, they are enthusiastic gamers and as a company have shown the agility and acumen needed to propel our industry towards a much-needed reset," said John Garcia, owner, founder and CEO of NovaLogic Inc. "After 30 years of creating ground breaking Computer and Video Games we are proud to pass the baton to THQ Nordic.
Now, in addition to gaining the NovaLogic trademark, should THQ Nordic wish to use it, the company has gained once popular military-themed franchises like the Delta Force, Comanche, Joint Operations, Armored Fist, Tachyon: The Fringe, F-22, F-16 and others.
In the last few years, the publisher has purchased Desperados and Silver from Atari, as well as the PC strategy series Jagged Alliance and Codename: Panzers. The publisher clearly has been looking to continue its strategy of buying IP that's been somewhat ignored and hoping to capitalize on them. Today, THQ Nordic brought in a handful more of properties with the acquisition of NovaLogic's assets. Nordic Games, which only recently rebranded as THQ Nordic, made a name for itself by taking on some of the now defunct THQ's properties (like Darksiders and Red Faction).
